When
missionaries in the 16e century discovered Chinese art, it revealed a
new conception of space, one not presenting an optical view, but
transmitting a vital tension. The philosopher Leibniz appreciated this
relational harmony as did the impressionists of the 19th century.
Gradually Chinese feeling penetrated the 20th century in for
example Van
Doesburg or Frank Lloyd Wright. According to Krikke it is even at the
root of visual computing.
